CAT is an MBA entrance exams held by the premier institutes IIMs. The test results can be used to get an admit to most of the top B-schools in India and is also accepted by Singapore Management University (SMU). It is the most popular MBA entrance exam in the country.
The test is conducted every year in the month of November/December. The registration for the test generally open in the 2nd week of August. You need to register at iim.ac.in and pay a registration fees. The general eligibility requirement is a bachelor’s degree with minimum 50% aggregate scores for General category students.
The entrance exam tests you on the following skills: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VA and RC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DI and LR), and Quantitative Ability (QA). As the test involves negative marking, be aware of picking a random answer on the MCQs, which make the most questions on the test.
The Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VA and RC) section includes Passage-based questions, Summary-based questions, Ordering sentences, and Odd-sentence out. A good reading habit and understanding of long passages can help you score higher and better on the test.
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DI and LR) section includes charts and graphs of all kinds. The questions are long word problems with a lot of information. As this is most probably something that you have not practiced before, a consistent practice on these types of questions is a must.
The Quantitative Ability (QA) section will include almost all topics in math from fractions to percentages to exponents to geometry. So, you must be prepared to answer the questions based on algebra, arithmetic, geometry, number system. The test follows a simple pattern and regular preparation takes you a long way.
